Chapter 15: Katherine

I popped another ripe strawberry in my mouth. My dad would be back today and there were only a few more hours between then and now. I’d been glad to wake up alone in the house this morning. Henry told me the night before that he had to meet some friends for some unnamed event. I hadn’t pushed. I needed the house to myself for a little while to see if there was anything to substantiate my concerns about him and Ana. It was easy to see how my dad had gotten so smitten with Ana so quickly. Henry was intoxicating and the more time I spent with him, the more time I’d need. My body still throbbed from his expert lovemaking. Every time since the first time had only gotten better and I feared that I was becoming addicted to him. But there had been doubt still growing in my mind about Henry and Ana. As much as I’d learned about him, there was still so much I didn’t know. There were still times when he would vanish during the night and return in the morning. I wished he would tell me where he went, but I didn’t want to sound like the jealous girlfriend. I just wanted to know what was so important that he’d leave me to wake up alone in bed most mornings.

I hoped whatever I found, I could live with, otherwise I would lose my mind without him.

I so hope to god he isn’t married!

I returned to the library. My body pulsed as I ran my fingers over the books, as if they were alive with memories. The library had the most beautiful collection of leather-bound books, which looked like pieces of art in themselves, far too delicate to even touch without gloves and a sensitive touch. I didn’t dare touch any of those in fear of damaging them.

There had to be something in here that could give me a clue as to what Henry and Ana were hiding. So far in my explorations, there was little about their lives from my dad. I knew Henry liked to travel and never settled down long enough to date and Ana seemed devoted to various humanitarian causes. But, there was nothing here about Henry’s childhood, his brothers who I know nothing about, or his dad. No pictures, or diplomas or any of the normal things you’d expect to find in a family home. I was just about to give up when I sat behind the desk. Absentmindedly, I pulled open the drawers looking for various office supplies there. I didn’t know what my next move was, but time was running out for me to find out.

In the very bottom drawer, a book wrapped in red ribbon caught my eye. I pulled it out, curious about the markings on the cover. The ribbon was easily unwrapped in my hands and I flipped through the book. My eyes were drawn to the pictures of Henry in various period clothing.
